A residence of artists in the Valley of the Kings

The French Institute, the International Comics and visual arts center, Greater Angoulême, and the City of Angoulême are associated to develop an artists’ residence in Upper Egypt.

The International City of Comics and Image has been showing its interest in productions in the Arab world for several years. In recent years, it has welcomed young authors from this part of the world and co-produced in 2018 the exhibition “New Generation, The Arab Comic Today” presented in Angoulême and in several countries of the Arab world.

Initiated by the comic book author Golo, who has been living in Angoulême since 2014, and the association Le Portillon, the international creative residence has welcomed five cartoonists linked to our territory as well as three Egyptian cartoonists to its house in Gurnah, Upper Egypt.

Golo has lived for two decades in Egypt and knows the local graphic “scene” perfectly. This residency project allowed its actors to work with local people and Egyptologists, develop artistic exchanges and lead a joint creative project. It also offered a new opportunity for cooperation between the French and Egyptian comics scenes and the development of rewarding relations with Angoulême.

An exhibition retraces this residence and allows to discover the work done during this stay.
